I wish someone told me just how complex the process is for a Canadian student athlete in the US.

As an MBA and a graduate of three Canadian universities, I thought I could easily brush up on what my husband and I didn’t already know to help our daughter and son navigate the world of a student athlete in the US. I thought, how hard can it be for someone who specializes in strategic planning, finance and operations for some large companies in Canada (Microsoft, SAP, TELUS).

I was also a student athlete, a multiple provincial gold medalist as well as a CIAU (Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union) national silver medalist in gymnastics. So, I thought I was prepared.

What I didn’t know at the time, and what we learned from the experience, is the process of interaction with the university, entry to the United States, tax implications and so much more, can be difficult without having a sense of how to navigate them.  We had to engage in extensive research spending countless hours, to ensure a successful path for our children.  For us, the experience, although challenging, has been highly rewarding and quite unlike any other!
